THE PIONEER OF FUNCTIONAL KNEE BRACING

Osteoarthritis (OA) braces are weight redistribution devices. They apply a varus or valgus force to the knee to “unload” the affected compartment by transferring weight onto the unaffected compartment. OA braces are only suitable for unicompartmental OA as the unaffected side must accept an increased load.

If a patient has arthritis in both the medial and lateral compartments, an unloading brace should not be used. An OA brace cannot unload the whole joint. However, these patients may get symptomatic relief from a compressive sleeve or a basic hinged knee brace. Osteoarthritis is a progressive disease. Bracing can be effective in both the early stages of unicompartmental OA, once the patients mobility becomes affected and extends to patients with severe joint issues who have greatly decreased mobility and quality of life. All DonJoy® OA braces are named after the compartment that is unloaded. The hinge managing the load is situated on the opposite side to the affected compartment.

THE ENOVIS BRACING REVIEW

The Enovis Bracing Review has been put together to help the experienced clinician complement their current practices. It has also been designed to help clinicians, who are new to the bracing journey learn about some of Enovis' more popular bracing options, how to select the correct brace, offer reasoning behind this selection and give fitting tips to help optimise the brace fit. Ideally our aim is to help you improve your patient’s rehabilitation and recovery outcomes.

Each chapter in this review is based either around an anatomical joint, a specific condition or a bracing type. In each of these chapters we have selected our most popular bracing options. Where appropriate we have added a Decision Tree to help simplify the selection process.

In some chapters you will also find a QR Code. These are linked to a short video, with one of our experienced clinical team members going through more extensive fitting hints and tips in their specific area of expertise. There are many other bracing options available at Enovis that offer subtle differences from those covered in this review.

If you would like to find out more information about any of our bracing and supports, Enovis' other medical devices or related services, then please contact our customer service team.

OFFLOADING BRACING RANGE

Does an OA brace cure osteoarthritis?

No. OA knee braces do not cure osteoarthritis. They are designed to help manage symptoms such as pain and instability, allowing patients to remain active and maintain function.

Can I exercise while wearing an OA knee brace?

Yes. OA knee braces are designed to support movement and help patients remain active. They may be worn during walking, golf, exercise and many daily activities, depending on advice from your healthcare professional.

How long should I wear my OA knee brace each day?

Wear schedules vary depending on your condition, activity level and healthcare provider's recommendations. Many patients wear their brace during activities that typically aggravate knee pain.

Can OA knee braces improve mobility?

Many patients experience improved stability, confidence and function when wearing an OA knee brace. By reducing painful loading forces, the brace may help patients stay active and participate in everyday activities.

How does an OA knee brace work?

OA knee braces use a process known as "off-loading" or load redistribution. The brace shifts weight away from the damaged compartment of the knee to a healthier area of the joint, helping reduce pain and improve function during daily activities
